Leading directions of scientific activity of N.A. Bokhan are devoted to the study of clinical, pathobiological, and ethnocultural patterns of socially significant mental disorders, comorbidity of mental, somato-neurological, and addictive disorders, pathogenetic mechanisms of mental disorders using an integrated clinical and biological approach, including genetic, biochemical, neurophysiological, neurocognitive, sociocognitive methods, with the aim of optimization of diagnostics and therapy, improvement of outcomes, deepening of remissions, and rehabilitation of patients; development of innovative technologies for therapy and rehabilitation of patients with mental disorders. The results of his scientific research are reflected in 862 scientific publications (with a total number of citations - 5556), including 45 scientific monographs, 50 RF patents for inventions, 464 articles in foreign (83) and domestic (381) press, including 58 articles are included in the Web of Science database (of which 18 are in editions included in the first and 12 in the second quartile of the Web of Science Core Collection), 86 are in Scopus (of which 44 are in editions included in the first and second quartiles of the Scimago Journal & Country Rank). His Hirsch index is 36 (RSCI), 14 (Web of Science), 14 (Scopus).

Taking an active civic position, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Bokhan N.A. conducts a large scientific and public and expert work, he is a member of the profile commission of the Expert Council in the field of healthcare of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in the specialty “Psychiatry” (2013), a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of the Russian Society of Psychiatrists (RSP, 2015), Chairman of the Ethnopsychiatry Section of the ROP (2015), Member of the Presidium of the Board of the National Addiction Medicine Society (NAMS) and Chairman of the Expert Commission on Ethnonarcology of the (NAMS) (2007),

He is a member of the Joint Scientific Council of the SB RAS for Medical Sciences (2015), and a member of the Joint Scientific Council of the Tomsk NRMC (2016). Member of the Bureau of the USC SB RAS for Medical Sciences (2017), member of the Presidium of the SB RAS (2017). Bokhan N.A. makes a significant contribution to strengthening the international prestige of domestic science. He is President of the International Association of Ethnopsychologists and Ethnopsychotherapists (IAEE, 2013) and a member of several professional societies, including the European Psychiatric Association (EPA, 2007), the Transcultural Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA-TPS, 2014), the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology ( ECNP, 2014), International Association of Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP, 2014), Addictive Behaviors Section of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA, 2017), Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association (ANZMH, 2017), Board of Directors of the World Association for Cultural Psychiatry (WACP, 2012-2015, 2015-2018). In 2018, he was elected Honorary Advisor to the Board of Directors of the World Association for Cultural Psychiatry (WACP). Since 2019, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Comorbid Disorders (Concurrent Disorders Society Inc.) and the Cultural Psychiatry Section of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA).
